Straddling two continents and navigating more genres than you thought possible, ‘Forbidden Acts of Vaudeville’ is a story of its own and stands as a testament to the world of Trip-Hop, Lounge, Chill, Delta Blues and everything that sits in between. Imagine if Tarantino was making a Mexican Western set in the 60s with villains and heroes intertwined with a touch of soul and mystery, this would be the soundtrack that would underpin its every move.
From the incredible opening of ‘Nighttime Is Almost Here’, which conjures up an expectation of fear and foreboding, the album takes you through a maze of textures and stories that will resonate with audiences who expect the very finest in musicianship from the word go. Tracks such as 'Heartaches and Troubles' serve as the perfect lounge tribute, with strings that speak to the Rat Pack and a downtempo beat making it dark and alluring at the same time. That theme continues as the album meanders through waves of melancholy with the notable blues influenced ‘Just Before Dawn’ announcing the light of the day. There is so much to love about the long player with ‘Twisted Thrill’ embodying the spirit of a southern juke joint back in the day and ‘Them’ menacing with a blend of moody vocals and portents of danger.
‘Forbidden Acts of Vaudeville’ is a throwback to a time when musicians and producers were unafraid to cross borders and venture into territory unknown. Moderator and Oddly Humes are the conductors that will guide you through a complex journey of sound and vision.
